In 1999 he joined ICAR-CNR, Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking of the Italian National Research Council, supported by an INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics) fellowship.
He obtained the PhD in Computer Science from the Radbound University, Nijmegen (Netherlands) with a thesis entitled "High Performance Data Mining using Bio-Inspired Techniques".

He works as seniore researcher at ICAR-CNR (Institute of High Performance Computing and Networking) in Cosenza, Italy.
He is also a lecturer at University of Calabria and at University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro since 2001 for a number of courses (Mobile and Social Computing, Operating System Laboratory, Operating Systems and Networks, Foundations of Computer Science and Applied Computer Science).

In 2012, he was member of the Evaluation Committee for the National Authority for Scientific Research (ANCS) of Romania, with the task of evaluating and classifying two public institutes of research of computer science in Bucharest.

He was visiting researcher Visiting researcher at University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) in 2007 and 2009, at Radbound University, Nijmegen (Netherlands) in 2008 and 2009 and at University of California (UCLA), Los Angeles, USA in 2013.

Within ICAR-CNR, he has been contributor of several national and international research/industrial projects, and since 2013 is coordinator of the project “Cyber Security – Digital and electronic payment services protection”. His research interests focus on applications of distributed computing, Big Data and Cloud Computing in the area of data mining, bio-inspired algorithms (particularly genetic programming and swarm intelligence) and cyber security. He published more than 100 papers in international conferences and journals among which IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Information Fusion, Information Sciences and Bioinformatics.

He is member of the Editorial Board of Applied Soft Computing, Elsevier, since 2017
He was guest editor per Future Generation Computer Systems, Elsevier (2010), and for New Generation Computing Systems, Springer, 2011 and Natural Computing, Springer, 2013.

He was chair for the special session "Multi-Agent and Bio-Inspired Algorithms and Applications for Distributed Systems" at IEEE PDP 2007 and for the BADS 2009, 20010 and 2011 (Bio-Inspired Algorithms for Distributed Systems, http://bads.icar.cnr.it) at ICAC conference.
He is member of the Program Committee of many international conferences and workshops (GECCO, EuroGP, EVOBIO, PACT, NICSO etc.) and reviewer for many international journals (IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computations, Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines, Future Generation Computer Systems, Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, Journal of Systems Architecture, etc.).
In 2013, he took the habilitation as Full Professor in Computer Science Engineering (9/H1, Sistemi di Elaborazione delle Informazioni) and in 2015 as Associate Professor in Computer Science (01/b1, Informatica).
